I serve as the taxonomy intern for CNN. My job centers around content produced for CNN.com and the tags we apply to different stories. These tags are relevant to subject material, relevant places or people, or major story lines that users wish to track (i.e. the 2020 Presidential Election). We primarily fact check machine-generated tags and add new tags to our taxonomy as needed.
The taxonomy division is part of the larger CNN Library. The Library serves as a resource for CNN bureaus around the world. We receive reference questions, archival content, and disseminate relevant resources regarding certain breaking news stories or fast facts to the CNN staff. The taxonomy division also works closely with the CNN Digital developers for content management.
A word of caution to those interested in my job and what I do: you have to be currently pursuing, or recently graduated from, an accredited library or information science program to be eligible for this internship!
