In addition to my teaching and research responsibilities, I am dedicated to working alongside other faculty, staff, students, and community members (both in Bloomington and worldwide). I quite simply enjoy working with people, having a great time, and making things happen.
ICSA (Informatics and Computing Student Association) – Faculty Advisor
“The Informatics & Computing Student Association (ICSA) aims to both provide programs and services for current IU Informatics and Computer Science students that will foster a connection to the School of Informatics, as well as promote the interests of and understanding between Indiana University Bloomington Informatics and Computing students and faculty.”
One of my favorite parts of my job is that I get to work with students both in and outside of the classroom. Serving as the advisor for ICSA, I am able to watch my former students blossom into the leaders of tomorrow (corny, I know – but TRUE). It is so inspiring to watch them work on projects and events – it’s actually pretty hands off for me as an advisor! It in energizing to see the students create their own programming and execute it with ease (ok, sometimes there are some “speedbumps”). It’s an invaluable experience for them as well as myself.
Habitat for Humanity of Monroe County – Crew Leader
“The mission of Habitat for Humanity of Monroe County is to eliminate poverty by building simple, decent, affordable homes in partnership with families in need. Habitat homeowners pay an interest-free mortgage and invest 250 hours of sweat equity, or volunteer time. Volunteer labor from Bloomington and Monroe County plus donations from individuals and organizations fund the construction and homeowner mortgage payments help sponsor future houses.”
I volunteer regularly with this group primarily during the Annual Whirlpool Build (in partnership with the IU Kelley School of Business) and the Annual Women’s Build). Building with Habitat is easily one of the most rewarding experiences that I have ever had the opportunity to be a part of which is what brings me back every year.
Humanetrix – Secretary
“The Humanetrix mission is to mobilize technologists to improve themselves and their community. Develop public interest technology tools and provide educational opportunities for technologists. Humanetrix activities primarily serve the Bloomington, Indiana and US Midwest areas.”
I have had the opportunity to work on Humanetrix sponsored projects in the past and was asked to serve on the Board (and most recently asked to serve as the Treasurer). I believe that an active technology community is the best type of community – we are able to educate community members as well as shed a light on this unique Midwestern “tech hub”, Bloomington, Indiana.
